Q: How do I get started at the Groundlings School?


There are ways to get started in the Groundlings School program.

Improv Workshop A :  Available to actors and non-actors alike, Improv Workshop A teaches the fundamentals of improvisation for beginners.  Build self confidence, develop your creativity, and experiment in an encouraging environment.

Basic Improv :  Designed for professional actors, Basic Improv teaches the fundamentals of improvisation through the use of theatre games and exercises.  You must have passed the Audition in order to participate in Basic Improv.

You may register online or in person.  There are no phone transactions.

Q: Do I need acting experience?


While not required, it is encouraged, especially if you are participating in our Core Track.  The Groundlings style of improv puts emphasis on character work, so previous experience in theatre and the performing arts will compliment your training here.


For the nonprofessional actor, Improv Workshop A is a great place to get started in our program.

 Q: Do my class results expire?


Audition and Core Track class results expire one year after your final class. If your results expire before you register for the next level, you will be asked to re-start the program. Students who are away from the program for over a year have been away from the material too long to maintain the integrity and continuity of our training. Please contact the school office for your specific expiration date.


 Q:  I finished a class and I can't sign up for the next level. What gives?
Upon completion of any given class, the teachers turn in results to the School Office. Our goal is to have accounts updated within 72 hours of course completion. Students will receive an email once results are entered informing them they can sign up for the next level or use the repeater discount on the level they recently finished. 


Q: I have experience with improv. Can I audition for a higher level than Basic?


Sorry, we do not allow anyone to audition for any level higher than Basic. Improv styles vary greatly from school to school, and it is important for all of our students to have the same foundation in our style before moving to an upper level.

Q: How do I get into the Main Company?


Main Company members complete and pass all levels of the Core Track, the Performance Track, and the Sunday Company before consideration for the Main Company.

Q: Do you allow audits?


No.  To preserve the integrity of the class and the comfort of our students, we do not allow outside participation or viewers in any of our classes or auditions.


However, we do offer Intro to Improv, a one day beginner’s workshop to give prospective students the chance to try out the Groundlings style of improv.  These classes are offered a couple of times a month. Please check the Registration page for upcoming times and dates.

Q: When are your classes offered?


We offer classes seven days a week at various times to try and accommodate as many different schedules as possible.


We post new classes each Monday in the afternoon.

Q: How long are your classes?


Workshop classes are either once-a-week for six weeks, twice-a-week for three weeks, or three times a week for two weeks.  Each class period is 3 hours.


Core Track classes meet once-a-week for twelve weeks, twice-a-week for six weeks, or three times a week for four weeks.  Each class period is 3½ hours.


Specialty classes meet for different periods of time.  Please check the Class Descriptions page for specific information.

Q: Are your classes gender balanced?

In order to create the best possible experience for the student, The Groundlings School seeks to gender balance Core Track and Performance Track classes.  Please select the appropriate box for your gender when registering.

Q: How long will it take me to complete the entire Groundlings program?

All students must first pass the Audition and complete the Core Track classes. The time it takes to complete all three levels varies greatly for every student, based on class results, class availability, and student availability. There is never a guarantee that any student will be invited to the next level. Many students are asked to repeat levels, possibly up to three times, which can impact how long it takes to complete the Core Track.


Select students who graduate from the Core Track may then be invited to continue their education in the Performance Track, which consists of Writing Lab and Advanced Writing Lab. The wait list for Advanced Lab is about 2+ years. Those who make it through the entire Performance Track may be invited into the Sunday Company.

Q:The class I want to sign up for is sold out.  Can I put my name on a waitlist in case someone drops?


We now have wait lists for selected classes.  If applicable, a "Waitlist" button will appear next to the class if it is sold out. Once you click on the button, select the class you wish to be on a wait list for. You'll receive an email confirmation when you sign up. If a space becomes available, another email will be sent to notify all on the wait list of the open spot. Spaces are first come-first serve once they become available. Should a space open, the “Sold Out!” next to the class will change to a link that says, “Enroll Now.”

Q: Once enrolled in a class, can I switch to a different time and/or date?

Our system does not allow transfers from one class to another.  We can drop you from the class you are currently in, but there is a drop fee, so we encourage students only to sign up for a class session they know they can attend. Q: If I miss a class, can I make it up?

We do not have the resources or availability to offer make-up classes if a student has to miss one. All classes also have a limit to the number of absences students are allowed; if they miss more than the maximum amount, they risk being repeated in that level. Q: Why don’t you list the names of the teacher in the class description?


Because all of the teachers at the Groundlings School work in the entertainment industry, their schedules can change at a moment’s notice.  It’s for this reason that we do a blind registration. Since all of our teachers have gone through the same rigorous training, it’s more important for students to register for a class that fits their busy schedule.

Q: Do you offer classes for teenagers?

Yes.  We have classes for teens (13-18) and pre-teens (11-12) that meet throughout the year.  Each class culminates with a show.  During the summertime, we offer week-long teen intensives.  For additional information check out our Teen Classes page.

Do you offer any writing classes?

Yes.  We offer Intro to Sketch and Writing Chops periodically through the year, though these classes tend to fill quickly.  For additional information, check out our Class Descriptions page.

Q: What do I need to prepare for the audition?

We ask that you bring a headshot and resume with you.  Please dress comfortably--the audition requires you to be active.

Q: If I can’t make the audition, can I send a video or demo reel?

No.  Our auditions are improvised group auditions.  Any videos sent will be discarded without being viewed.

Q: Where do I park for classes?

  • Parking meters:  you can fill a meter for a maximum of two hours.  There is a break in the middle of class if you need feed the meter again.  Metered parking ends at 8pm each night.
  • Street parking:  there are several streets in the neighborhood that you can park on, but read the signs--restrictions change block to block.
  • In the evenings, valet parking is available from local businesses.
  • One ADA compliant handicapped parking space is available behind the school location on a first come, first served basis. A handicapped placard is required.

Q: Do students get discounts on tickets to Groundlings shows?

Yes.  On the first day of class, students are given a punch card that allows them to see each of our five main shows once for free.  These tickets must be obtained at the Box Office in person one hour prior to show time on a first come, first served basis. The punch cards are only valid for the duration of the class.


Students are also eligible for one half-price ticket to each of our five main shows by presenting their card at the Box Office.  This offer is only valid for the duration of the class.

Q: Do you offer payment plans for your classes?

Yes.  There are two different payment plan methods:


Payment Plan A:  for a $5.00 non-refundable fee, you can pay a $100 deposit at the time of registration, and the remaining balance will be autocharged on the first day of class.


Payment Plan B:  For a $25.00 non-refundable fee, you can pay a $100.00 deposit at the time of registration, and the remaining balance will be split--the first half will be autocharged on the first day of the course and the remainder will be autocharged at the midpoint of the course.  Please note, if you have a discount or class credit of any type, that will reduce the final payment only.

Q: Can I buy gift certificates for classes?

Yes.  Gift certificates can be bought in person at the Groundlings School Office or on our website.

Q: What are the Groundlings School office hours?

The Groundlings School is open Monday through Friday from 10:00am to 5:00pm.  Weekend hours vary.
