TECHNICAL PRODUCTION MANAGER

Full-time, non-exempt, medical, dental, vision 

FULL-TIME ROLE: TECH PRODUCTION MANAGER

We are seeking a highly organized, technically skilled, and solutions-oriented Technical Production Manager to lead all technical and facility operations across our theatre and school. This position serves as a vital link between artistic vision and logistical execution—ensuring every performance, class, and event is delivered smoothly and professionally.

Key Responsibilities:

Production Oversight:

  • Manage and coordinate technical support for all Groundlings productions, student shows, rentals, and special events.

  • Create and distribute weekly production calendars and technical schedules.

  • Serve as a liaison to directors, producers, and creative teams to translate creative needs into executable plans.

  • Support stage managers and crews to ensure technical readiness for each show.

Technical Operations:

  • Oversee lighting, sound, projection, and streaming equipment across all venues.

  • Schedule and supervise part-time and freelance technical staff.

  • Coordinate setup for complex productions, including multimedia elements or livestreaming needs.

  • Maintain and troubleshoot all technical systems and inventory.

Facilities Oversight:

  • Oversee daily and long-term maintenance of performance spaces, classrooms, and offices.

  • Coordinate building repairs (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, etc.) with vendors and landlords.

  • Manage janitorial services and cleanliness of the facility.

  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and emergency protocols.

Administrative & Leadership Duties:

  • Hire, train, and manage part-time technical coordinator and over-hire crew.

  • Develop and manage departmental budgets related to production and facilities.

  • Provide monthly status reports to senior leadership on operations and spending.

  • Maintain records of repairs, upgrades, and safety checks.

Compensation & Benefits:

This is a full-time, salaried position, but will be part-time for training for the first 4 weeks—we're looking to start someone as soon as possible with an official start date of May 1, 2025. Starting salary: $55,000-60,000K

PART-TIME: TECHNICAL COORDINATOR ROLE

Overview:
This role is boots-on-the-ground support for productions and day-to-day facility needs. They work under the guidance of the Tech Production Manager and are responsible for executing the physical and technical setup of our performance and classroom spaces.

Key Responsibilities

Production Support:

  • Build, paint, and strike simple sets and prop pieces

  • Track inventory of tech assets (mics, cables, lighting instruments, etc.)

  • Assist with load-ins and load-outs for shows

  • Operate or prep lights, microphones, projectors, and playback equipment

  • Help set up live-stream or recording gear for shows when needed

  • Assist with running tech during performances if needed

Facilities Work:

  • Handle basic repairs (e.g., patching walls, fixing chairs, changing lightbulbs)

  • Assemble furniture or fixtures for classrooms and offices

  • Maintain shop tools and workshop cleanliness

  • Identify issues needing escalation to the Production Manager or outside vendors

General Support:

  • Respond quickly to last-minute tech issues during performances

  • Maintain a clean, organized backstage, booth, and tech closet

  • Support seasonal decorations, lobby installations, and miscellaneous creative projects

Skills Required:

  • Carpentry and painting skills

  • Basic knowledge of AV setup and troubleshooting

  • Reliable, flexible, and available during off-hours or emergencies

  • Comfortable working independently and as part of a team

Compensation: $22–$25/hour, based on experience

Light Board Operator

The Groundlings Theatre is seeking a part-time Light Board Operator.

Qualified candidate must fit the following criteria:

  • Proficient in light board operation (specifically an ETC Express 48/96 lightboard).

  • Knowledge of programming; some programming may be done on the fly.

  • Live event lightboard operation.

  • Troubleshooting LED fixtures and working with DMX.

  • Ability to check and maintain lighting fixtures and replacing lamps and gels when needed.

This is a part time position for Friday & Saturday afternoon/nights on an ongoing basis, with potential availability for additional shows on other nights. Hands-on training prior to the start of scheduled shows. Shows with pre-show rehearsals can range from 5-8 hours per night. Training dates TBD based on availability; all training hours paid.

We specialize in improvisation and sketch comedy, so familiarity with these formats and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, program quickly and make pivots with ongoing changes is essential.

INTERNSHIPS

The Groundlings Theatre and School offers quarterly internships to qualified candidates. Candidates must be full-time college students (junior, senior, or graduate school) earning college credit.  Internships are approximately 24 hours per week for 10-12 weeks.
