Improv for Beginners

A stress-free 2 1/2 hour introduction to improv. This is a great opportunity to learn some of the basics from the comfort of your own home. Everyone will have a chance to participate.

Sketch Writing for Beginners

Great for students just getting started who want an overview of the basics of sketch writing and to try their hand at writing a sketch or two. Bring your funny ideas and we’ll show you how to turn them into hilarious sketches!

Sketch Writing Workshop A

A deeper dive into sketch writing! Through in-class writing exercises and discussion you will learn to identify beats, write for your medium, and to find and develop new material. For each class, students will write and submit sketches and we will find the gold in whatever you create. Beginners also welcome.

Already know the basics? Let’s keep going! Bring in your sketches and get top quality notes to turn your own comedic sensibility into sketches you can be proud of. Students are asked to send a finished sketch to the instructor before the first class.

Basic

Basic Improv introduces students to the fundamentals of improvisation through the use of games and exercises in a fun, fast-paced environment. Basic lays the foundation for The Groundlings style of improv and sketch, which each level above Basic will build upon.

Formerly called Advanced Improv, Improv Lab focuses on expanded character development and advanced scene work through improv and writing exercises, and culminaties in an improv performance on the Gary Austin Stage.

Writing a TV Pilot

with Margee Magee

This class will show you how to go about writing a TV Pilot. Whether your idea is for a half hour comedy, an hour long drama, limited series, animation or a sketch/variety show, you will be shown how to put your idea onto paper. The class will be a writer’s room where you will develop your script and In six weeks you will be well on your way to completing the first draft of your pilot. Four time Emmy nominated writer/producer George McGrath has been working in television since the mid 1980’s and has been teaching pilot writing for the last ten years.

Celebrate the Holidays in the most genius way possible with Holiday Hijinks, a unique one day workshop (IN PERSON) with Groundlings instructor Henry Watkins. A three hour romp through short form games and exercises geared to be friendly to Workshop and Basic level students, all themed around the Holidays. Here’s your chance to show off your elf spacework and your Santa scenecraft. Who knows what you’ll find beneath the improv tree this year? This class! (And isn’t that the greatest gift of all?)
